N-1-3-011.10, "CUNET: Caribbean Academic, Scientific and Technological Network", by Jose Mendez*, CUNET is a project dedicated to the establishment of a cooperative network among countries in the Caribbean Region, and to encourage the development of their respective national networks. The First Caribbean Academic and Scientific Network Seminar/Workshop, celebrated during the month of September 1991, was organized by the Organization of American (OAS), the Corporation for the Academic, Scientific and Research Network of Puerto Rico (CRACIN), and the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). The participants represented institutions from member states of the OAS, mostly English-speaking countries, and the Dominican Republic. During this seminar participants were trained to install and administrate nodes which would mainly serve for electronic mail and file transfer. Participating countries at this first encounter included: Antigua, Barbados, Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. However, other countries have been invited to participate in this effort. A visitation program was initiated to provide extra support to participating countries. Also, high speed modems are being provided to countries with a reasonable amount of traffic. Currently, information exchange is done via UUCP over high-speed dial-up lines. At the present the following nodes are currently operational: Jamaica - University of the West Indies - College of Arts and Science - College of the West Indies Suriname - University of Suriname Grenada - Grenada National College Trinidad and Tobago - National Institute of Higher Education, Research Science and Technology (NIHERST) - Caribbean Industrial Research Institute Dominican Republic - Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra - REDID (Union Latina) Other participating institutions and countries are: Antigua - University of Health Sciences Barbados - University of the West Indies Bahamas - Chamber of Commerce Belize - University of Belize Dominica - Ministry of Education St. Kitts and Nevis - College of Advanced Education St. Lucia - Ministry of Planning - Institute of Self Improvement For further information contact: Jose Mendez CUNet Technical Coordinator j_mendez@racin.clu.net CRACIN PO Box 5355 Hato Rey, Puerto Rico 00919 *CUNet Technical Coordinator, Hato Rey, Puerto Rico
