Internet Service Providers Offering Dialup Access -- From A to Z Version 0.95 (beta/draft) Genevieve Engel October 5, 1992 Please send corrections and additions to: gen@magnum.ucop.edu This section includes systems that: - can be reached by dialing up with a modem - offer some Internet services (at a minimum, e-mail to and from the Internet). In addition, some systems offer high-speed connections, and most also offer other Internet services besides mail. Most also offer access to Usenet newsgroups (especially those providers listed as offering "full Internet services"). Some systems are useful mainly for access to Internet; others, such as local BBS or commercial multi-user services, also have a range of additional online services for their subscribers. This is a PARTIAL list. Because there is no central Internet administration that keeps a list of dialup service providers, the following entries have been culled from various sources. New Internet service providers are becoming available on a frequent basis. Check with your nearest midlevel network of the NSFnet, if it is not already listed here, for information on whether dialup access is available; more midlevels are adding this access, and some educational or library institutions have found their best rates by going through their local midlevel network. After getting an account with Internet e-mail facilities, subscribing to mail distribution lists such as lib_hytelnet2 and PACS-L is a good way to get information on new service providers. A subscription to PDIAL is an excellent source of updates; send mail to info-deli-server@netcom.com with the subject "Send PDIAL" for a one-time current list or "Subscribe PDIAL" for updates. The "nixpub" list is a source of current information on Unix systems accessible to the public through dialup; many of the systems on this list include some level of Internet services. The nixpub list can be retrieved several ways including by sending e-mail to mail-server@bts.com. The mail should consist of the line: get PUB nixpub Hytelnet, PACS-L, PDIAL, and nixpub were major sources of information for this list. Telephone numbers listed are for voice telephone calls unless they are marked "modem." Where a modem number is listed, it can usually be dialed for a free demonstration log-in to try out the system or get more detailed information about it. Settings required for dialing up vary; generally, one of these will work: 7 data bits, 1 stop bit, even parity 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity If you try one of these, and you seem to connect but get strange characters on the screen, try the other. If neither will work, try contacting the service provider by phone or mail for further information. Costs will have changed for some systems. They should be used only for general comparisons. Where a "prime time" or "non-prime" rate is shown for hourly connection charges, prime time will usually be during the day and non-prime during the night. * a2i communications 1211 Park Avenue #202 San Jose, CA 95126-2924 modem: (408) 293-9010 modem: (408) 293-9020 Connection: Log on to personal account through modem.
