We serve Northern Europe as the primary area, but the archive is open to users from all the corners of the World. The timezone in Finland is EET, which is GMT +2 plus one hour in summer time. Our file server is a Digital AXP 3000-900 (275 MHz Alpha, 320Mb RAM) with a total total disk capacity of 110 gigabytes, of which about 87 gigabytes is available for the public file areas. We now have (Sep/97) over 20000 Amiga related files available for downloading. FTP file archive ftp.funet.fi/pub/amiga Internet Gopher server ftp:gopher.funet.fi@/pub/amiga World Wide Web hypertext http://www.funet.fi/pub/amiga Archie file search database telnet archie.funet.fi Internet Relay Chat channel irc.funet.fi #Amiga NewAmiga subscription requests AREA MAINTAINERS Of all over one hundred archive maintainers, specialized to the Amiga are: Tomi Jaskari, University Of Helsinki, jaskari@nic.funet.fi Heikki Pora, Lappeenranta University of Technology, pora@nic.funet.fi Our group's address is amiga-adm@ftp.funet.fi. Please use e-mail instead of interactive programs such as talk unless you are in emergency. ACCESS METHODS There are five methods of accessing the archive. * FTP - File Transfer Protocol Open a connection to ftp.funet.fi. Login as "ftp" and give your complete e-mail address as the password. Then, make sure you have a binary mode connection (type "bin" in most systems). After this, change the directory to /pub/amiga with the "cd" command. You can view directory contents with the "dir" command and retrieve files with "mg" and "get". When it is time to end the transfer session, just type "quit". * WWW - World Wide Web World Wide Web is the Internet stardard for hypertext databases and information services. In addition to formatted text, it supports also sound and graphics. There are two type of client programs: character based clients (Lynx) and graphics clients (Netscape / IE). To access the FUNET Archive via WWW, copy the following to the URL field which is usually in the top part of your client: "http://www.funet.fi/pub/amiga". If you have Lynx, just type this as the only parameter for it. * Gopher You can access the archive also by using the Internet Gopher. Depending on your client and computer system, you can retrieve files, read text files, display images, listen to sounds and access various services of the Internet. There are thousands of organizations providing Gopher service to the public. After starting up Gopher, follow first the geographic path to Finland. Then select "FUNET" and after it "ftp.funet.fi", "pub" and finally "amiga". You are now in the root directory of our file tree and can start viewing what we have here. In case you don't find here easily, you can also use the command "gopher gopher.funet.fi". * Mailserver The archive server has a sophisticated mailserver which serves people who can access the archive only by e-mail. The mailserver has many of functions, one being a sender of files. Files will be sent to you in a format you select -- uuencoded is the most usual format. Try the mailserver by sending the command line "help" by e-mail to the address mailserver@lists.funet.fi. SPECIAL FILES See the file "INDEX" for a description of the various subdirectories. For a listing of all files in this tree, including all Fish disks, get "FILES.gz". If you don't yet have GNU zip, get "FILES". "ChangeLog" contains some descriptions of actions taken by maintainers. "ROADMAP" is a tree model representation of the whole /pub/amiga hierarchy, listing each and every public directory. SEARCHING FOR THE FILES There are several methods to search for the files in /pub/amiga. The main method is using the command "quote find filename" in the FTP command prompt. You can also transfer the mentioned FILES.gz and search for files in another computer -- usually much faster. Archie is a database of filenames and directories of Internet file archives. To use it, telnet to your closest Archie server, and login as "archie". Search for files with the command "prog filename". archie.funet.fi (Finland) archie.luth.se (Sweden) archie.doc.ic.ac.uk (United Kingdom) archie.cs.huji.ac.il (Israel) archie.rutgers.edu (Rutgers University, USA) archie.sura.net (SURAnet, USA) archie.unl.edu (University of Nebraska, USA) archie.ans.net (ANSnet, USA) archie.wide.ad.jp (Japan) archie.ncu.edu.tw (Taiwan) archie.au (Australia) CONTRIBUTIONS We welcome requests for archiving of any freely distributable Amiga specific software or data. See the directory /pub/amiga/incoming for details how to submit your files to the archive. Direct all files to the subdirectories under the incoming directory. ARCHIVE FILE FORMATS Formats used in this hierarchy are: lha file archive program: LhA (unregistered version: LhA_e138.run) gz used here mostly with pure text files program: GNU zip (gzip/gunzip) DMS used with disks which have no file structure program: DMS We have only few files in the following formats: run self-extracting archive to extract, type the archive's name in shell tar non-compressed tape archive program: tar (files of Unix origin) The official upload formats are lha and DMS. Programs needed can be found in directory /pub/amiga/utilities/archivers. LhA for other systems is available in /pub/msdos/packing/archivers and /pub/unix/tools/lha-lharc. BIG FILES There are many files here which don't fit nicely to a standard PC DOS floppy of 720k which many people use for transferring files to their Amigas. One solution is to use the split and join commands found inside Stefan Boberg's LhA package (LhA_e138.run). Copy split and join to your c: or bin: and compile split.c and join.c on your Internet host. This way you can split big files to pieces of about 720k and join them together after transfer to the Amiga. Please note that you can save a lot of space by first putting all files inside one single lha file, and then splitting it. MISCELLANEOUS As you may have already noticed, we sort our files into one large hierarchy. We maintain a standard in file names in all parts of the file tree: the names are a form of {program name}-{version number}.{archive format}. Just like in the name "PGPAmiga-2.3a.lha". The standard procedure here at the FUNET Archive is, that all files are checked and remain invisible before made available to the public. However, we strongly suggest you check every file you download from any file archive with a virus checker yourself also. Virus checkers can be found in directory /pub/amiga/utilities/virus/ -- see the dates to find the latest. Files that build up disks together of several pieces have been numbered in this way: extension -1 means the file contains a complete disk number one of two or more disks; extension -3b means the file contains the second part of disk number three of three or more disks. This kind of files are for example "RAW-05a.DMS" and "RAW-05b.DMS". These two files include tracks to build a complete disk which contains issue 5 of R.A.W. disk magazine. A lot of programs use Markus Wild's ixemul.library that emulates some unix routines. The 150k library should not be included inside every archive file. It is available here in directory /pub/amiga/libraries/ as a single file. To type out a text file, for example one of the various readme files, type ftp> get README |more assuming you use a unix system. If you have access to a X terminal or workstation, we suggest you get a copy of either Ftptool or xftp, both FTP client programs with graphical interfaces. They reside in /pub/X11/contrib/.
