The Macintosh Runtime for Java environment (MRJ) is up to version 2.0
supporting JDK 1.1.3 and is currently in beta-testing. Windows JDK
versions are up to 1.1.5 to fix some Win32-specific bugs (I believe).
If you go to and sign up for the MRJ
developer's list, you'll be notified when new MRJ versions become
available and instructions on how to download are provided.
I wouldn't spend too much time looking for anything Mac-related on the
java.sun.com site. They have very little info and only distribute Java
code in .ZIP format for Window and .TAR for UNIX. I've been pretty
successful in downloading Windows .ZIP files and using the classes with
MRJ though.
MRJ 2.0 is looking really solid...so far I've developed three in-house
standalone Java applications that look like a well-behaved Mac OS
application developed in C/C++/Pascal. Hopefully I'll be releasing a
freeware app (an Extensions Manager on steroids) written entirely in Java
as soon as MRJ 2.0 is released to the public so stay tuned!
Hope this helps,
Chris

Fear not! Simply trash the Finder Prefs and immediately restart. The
system will create a new one, and you don't loose any major settings.
Corrupted Finder Prefs are fairly common. It's nothing to worry about.

Subject: (Q) Problem reading floppy disks
My problem with reading floppy disks, about which I posted a question
earlier, has evolved to this point: I have a disk that I can read in any
startup configuration, except when I start with the SHIFT key down (all
extensions off). This is the opposite of what one would expect if there
were a software conflict with the system software. Does anyone have an idea
of what could be the cause of the problem as described above?
Thanks!

If you go here:
You'll find MacOS Runtime for Java 1.5.1, and it's SDK, both of which are
compatible with MacOS 8.
They do not yet implement the 1.1 Java spec. MRJ 2.0 will do this; it is
available as a developer seed now, and is suppsed to ship with 8.1.

Yes. If you don't have a backup copy of your Finder Preferences file, just
trash the broken one and restart. A new one will be created.

Yes, many preferences files get damaged from time to time. They can be
trashed and the application (Finder is an application, too) will
create a new one when it is launched again.. You will loose the
information stored in it, which might mean that settings revert to
factory default or that registration data will be "forgotten", but
Finder Preferences doesn't contain anything important.
>After a recent HD crash and the painful rebuild of
>all data, I am a little scared to play around!
Well, play it safe: Put the file in the trash, restart the Mac and
then empty the trash.

Subject: [Q] ZTerm and High Speed Modems
I recently started using Z-Term with a Hayes Accura 56K modem. I have
the modem set to show DCE-DCE connect speed. When I call a BBS and get a
CONNECT 31200 or lower, everything seems to work fine. But, if I call
and get a CONNECT 32000 or higher, after that all I get is a bunch of
garbage. It really hoses up the Mac to the point that I sometimes have
to restart to clear the serial port so that I can try again. I have
checked the settings and all look to be OK (but obviously something is
wrong). I have RTS/CTS handshaking on as well as XON/XOFF and I set the
data speed to as high as ZTerm allows (which I believe is 230000). Any
help in solving this puzzling dilemma would be appreciated.

dunno whether you'll have much success with these, since QT already
has some compression options.
> What free/cheap utils will do this, and where would they be found?
For "cheap" I'd suggest the wonderful "CompactPro", I don't know in
which version it is now (1.5.1?), and -- more important -- I don't
know whether the author is still developing it. You'll sure find it
in InfoMac, somewhere, preferably under "Compression" or "Pack" or
something like that. Lemme know if you don't find it, then I'll try
and help.
CompactPro is shareware.
If you want to spill out a little more $$ and jump on the de-facto
standard, then get the commercial product "StuffIt Deluxe 4.5" from
Aladdin (get more info and sometimes special rebates @
aladdinsys.com). You'll also walk on the safer side this way, since
StuffIt will be continued (at least I'd bet on that). I use it for
all my archiving. It is a wonderful tool and gives you many options
like de/compressing from the desktop with just a key combo or via
simply appending ".sit" or ".sea" to your files/folders. Cool, huh?
The folks at Aladdin also give out some of their drag-'n-drop
utilities as shareware, as far as I know also "DropStuff".

you're welcome

Subject: Apple 21'' Mono monitor w/ Centris 650 problem
Would someone please tell me why the Apple Two Page Mono Monitor isn't
working with my Centris 650?
It's connected via original cable (plug comprises 3 x co-ax connectors +
2 rows x 5 pins) to the Mac II Workstation Video Card (WVC 1.0 - P/N
342-0245) designed for this display. I've tried each of the NuBus 3 slots.
Although the card was produced way before the Centris, the standard Mac
II Video Card works fine with this machine.
The 2-Page card is not recognised by MacCheck or other diagnostic
programs, tho' the Mac II card is.
OS is 7.5.5. Quadra monitors extension is installed. I tried turning
32-bit and cache switch on and off, but no video on the 2-page.
I installed the Two-Page card on a IIci and a Mac II and everything works
fine.
Is there any possible workaround for this setup? The card should give a 4
bit display, which would suit me fine.
Otherwise, is there another, general purpose card compatible with this
cable/monitor.
Any help would be much appreciated - thanks.

There's nothing wrong with uuencode, assuming that you have nothing in the
resource fork of your file. So, you can email a Word file using uuencode
because everything's in the data fork. However, if you email an
application, it will be destroyed because most of the code is in the
resource fork.

I work with a guy who buys computer parts by the truckload at auctions and then
resells them. He deals only in PC type stuff, however. He recently came to me
with some Mac equipment that found its way into a lot of PC components that he
bought. The parts are an Apple Color StyleWriter 2200 Battery Attachment
(M3618ZM/A) and two rechargable batteries for the Attachment (M4084G/A). (The
Attachment itself already has a battery included.)
He has no use for them and knows nothing about things Apple. He asked me (since
he knows I'm a Mac-head) if I could find an interested party. I told him that
this sounded like one of those things that Apple made but that really had no
market. He said that he would even give them away to a good cause rather than
trash them. We agreed that I would sell them for him to the highest bidder that
I could find and that if I didn't get any bidders, he would agree to donate
them to a school or charitable organization. So, I agreed to ask around. To date
I have found no one that even owns a StyleWriter 2200 much less cares about
making it portable. So I figured that I'd expand the search. Please contact me
if you are interested in these items. No reasonable (or unreasonable)offer
will be refused; including donating them to a bona fide charitable/educational
organization.

The danger would be if you read your email in something like Microsoft
Word, and an attachment to a piece of email contained a macro virus.
However, note that in such a case reading the *email itself* does not
spread the virus; reading the attachment does. The email isn't carrying
the virus, the attachement is.

Yes, as far as I know. The problem is that email clients receive 7-bit
ASCII and don't interpret included code, so there's no way to include
self-running code within an email message. The only way to become infected
from an email message is if it contains a Trojan horse attachment that you
run manually, at which point it's your own fault. :-)

I don't know of any way to do this automatically, although I haven't
researched it carefully.
However, I did just take a look at the Netscape AddressBook.html file and
the Eudora Nicknames file, and wrote a NisusWriter macro that can convert
between them (I don't know if it's perfect, but it worked on my samples).
If anyone wants the macro, just let me know.

Definite FAQ here. :-) (Shamless Plug: I cover this and gobs more in my
latest book, "Eudora for Windows & Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide" -
you can learn more and see Eudora tips and news at my site at:
)
The trick is to make a new folder, put a _copy_ of the Eudora Settings file
in that folder, and launch Eudora by double-clicking on the Eudora Settings
file. Then you can configure the second Eudora Settings file however you
want. From then on, just make sure to launch Eudora by double-clicking the
settings files (make aliases with different names and put them in your
Apple Menu Items folder, for instance).

Repeat for each field you want to clear:
1. Find All Records.
2. Go to the first record.
3. Clear the desired field.
4. With the cursor in the "target field", hit cmd-= or choose "Replace"
from the Mode menu.
5. In the dialog that appears, confirm that you want to replace the
contents of this field in every record with "".
6. Wait.
7. Go to step 1.
You could script this, but if you're doing it as a one-time thing for a
small number of fields, writing hte script would probably take longer than
just doing it as above.
Another option would be to export the fields you're interested in keeping,
save an empty copy of the database, then reimport the exported data into
the new empty DB.

It's an incorrect error message, possibly caused by an extension conflict

fix this erroneous error message. It won't fix the crashes, but you should
at least get an accurate report of what is broken.

If you don't that would mean someone had physically removed it from the

Yes. I wopuld suggest backing the drive up, reformatting, and restoring.

No. Not aside from the possible braincell burner of having the internal
disk set to a non-standard ID. For example, you might attach a CD-ROM
externally and set it to ID 2 if you forget that the internal disk is
already at 2. Technically, there's not a problem.

Sure. I can go into more detail if you want to do this.

MacOS 8 requires a machine with a 68040 processor; your Iici has a 68030,
so you cannot run MacOS 8.
