It seems to have a pattern with those that answered my call. In most cases it seemed to be related to very large files and interestingly enough to i/o to an external drive that need not be a jaz drive as in my case. It appears to be a BUG...oooh, how I hate those insects....Now Apple, are you out there listening? You have a problem...and so do we. I should point out that Apple Canada noted that there might be a problem but the one that they mentioned related to memory and losses of some files rather than a freeze up which is what I and a number of my correspondents get on download. Thanks to all that posted to me. You have saved me more hours attempting to debug. It is out of my league and likely needs to be addressed by Mother Apple. They don't decode with Stuffit Expander, either as a .hqx file or as a .sit file. I've gotten great help in this forum before, and now need to ask for help again. The files I've tried include the Wallace & Gromit icon files at http://www.aardman.com/goodies/Mac/W+G_icons.html and On-Line Bible at http://www.bythenumbers.com/dlothers.htm Both of these sites claim to have .hqx Binhex files of some size. I download them with Netscape to a non-Macintosh machine (VMS or UNIX). (For now, I can't download directly to my Mac.) I ftp (in binary mode) the files to a Wintel machine. I copy them to a floppy disk for transportation. I load the disk into my Macintosh, running PC Exchange. I copy the files from the floppy to my hard drive. The files won't decode or otherwise do anything with Stuffit Expander. Changing the file extension to .sit doesn't change the outcome. I have successfully decoded and unstuffed other files before, including files via Netscape downloading and ftp, so I'm not totally new to this process. Other Binhex files I've downloaded start with something like: (This file must be converted with BinHex 4.0) :#NCKG$!b-#jcC@%!39"36'&eFh3J!!!6Z&d!!%P@[[&6593K!!N!%lKGFNaKG3, r!*!$&[rr$3d(B@4KBQPZC!#3!`&YYYX!!1Pm1!!!r`"!J+qi!!da)JhN!*!6!J# and end with something like: T@f,'!3$AZ,B9!!B!!!)q!!!Nh`!!!C-!!""@'dX!!!: The problem files look to me like binary files, since the files start with: STi2 followed by lots of "gibberish" characters, not the 7-bit encoded ASCII chars in a normal Binhex file. They don't have the beginning and ending ":" markers. Does this mean that the files are really binary, not Binhex? Have the files been corrupted during their journey to my Mac, such that Stuffit cannot decipher them? Can the file type/creator be changed to make Stuffit recognize them; and if so, how? Could I Binhex the files on a VAX, UNIX, or Wintel machine before copying to floppy; and if so, how? What is a good, not too convoluted, way to get these files onto my Mac? Is all lost? I have to >force quit to restart. -----x snip x----- I have the same problem on two systems, but not on the third system. BUT, I am certain that it has nothing to do with the Jaz drive. It only happens (to us) when copying from any drive on the internal SCSI bus to any drive on the external bus. My 9500/225 w/ 160 NB real ram has two big Quantums on the internal, and a big IBM external, plus the Jaz. I can copy internal-to-internal w/ no problems, and external-to-external w/ no problems. Any copy from internal-to-external or ext-to-int may hang...the larger the copy, the higher the certainty. Additional evidence: I can use DropStuff to compress the same material on target drive and it works fine. Gotta have something to do with basic I/O timing! All the above is true whether I use Finder or Speed (Copy) Doubler 8.0.1. It also happens on a 7600/120 w/ 80 MB real. It NEVER happens on my 8500/180 w/ 128 MB real, and same drive config as the 9500. I have reported this to Apple, but they are evasive about a fix in 8.1. Maybe there is good reason: I am in early stage of exploring a problem with Norton CrashGuard 3.5.1 that seems to occasionally trap an I/O without releasing it to the owner. Causes a hang in Navigator 4.0.4 when reading its Preferences at initialization. That's for sure! Does it cause this other I/O problem?
