SHORT DESCRIPTION
--------------------
African Stone game v.2.2.0
LONG DESCRIPTION
-------------------
The Awale is one of the most ancient games still played.
The Masai say that the Awale was invented by Sindillo, the son of the
first man, Maitoumbe, and was originally called geshe. The rules of
the game are simple, but the strategies needed to win are quite
challenging. With Awale, you'll play against the computer or another
player to one of the 13 pre-defined rules from all over the world
(from India to Barbados).
The object of the game is to capture more stones than your opponent.
To help you learn and play the game, a dialog box appears with
comments on the actions performed. You can: define your own rules,
undo the last move, see the history list of all played holes in the
game (allowing you to restart a game at any point to find another
strategy), and more. Awale also features: excellent graphics and sound
effects, scoring, online help, game save, a powerful A.I. algorithm,
user-definable Grand Master level, and an English and French version.
African-style musics and sound effects are also included.
A very realistic game, with solid wood and clattering stones.

direction.
When you put the last ball in the line all balls in that line will
disappear
and you get a free turn.

Subject: [*] Cascade Light 1.0 - Cascading Style Sheets Designer
Cascade Light 1.0
Cascade Light is a comprehensive Cascading Style Sheets designer for Web
authors. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) give Web designers better control
over presentation style, makes website management more efficient and leads
to a more adaptable and accessible web. A Cascading Style Sheet can set
fonts, colors, white space and other layout aspects of an HTML document in
an efficient and flexible manner. CSS is a style sheet standard developed
by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), and is supported by web browsers
such as Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer.
Cascade Light provides a dialog on the Mac to define any style setting that
can be expressed in CSS. Cascade can even automatically apply a Cascading
Style Sheet to an HTML document in such a way that the style sheet is
emulated for older browsers that don't support CSS. Thus webmasters can
benefit from Cascading Style Sheets now and still maintain the design for
older browsers.
Cascade Light works on both PPC and 68K Macs with System 7.0 or later and
2.9 Mb free RAM. More information about Cascade Light is available from:
http://interaction.in-progress.com/cascade
[ The application has been uploaded to the FTP site. It should go in the
Internet/HTML folder, eventually with a copy in the Internet/WWW folder.
Cascade Light can be included in the CD-ROM distribution (contact me for
legal issues) ]

Subject: [*] CraftGen
SpiderweBB has officially released CraftGen version 3.0.
This utility randomly generates an unlimited number of
scenarios for WarCraft II by Blizzard Entertainment.
Version 3.0 brings not only new features to an already
versatile program, but it also is being released on the
Mac platform for the first time.
The latest version of CraftGen introduces Spy Critters
functionality. This enhancement allows critters to be
assigned to players as units. You can direct their
movements and even load them on boats, but to all
outward appearances they are regular critters. Your
enemies may never suspect that the docile sheep munching
grass next to the town hall is allowing you to keep an
eye on their every move!
Of course, CraftGen has retained all the functionality
that has made it such a popular utility for WarCraft II,
offering complete control over every aspect of
the game, from the percentage of forest and land to
the attack range of a peon. But beyond that,
SpiderweBB has unlocked features hidden within
WarCraft II. These features include Secret Mountain
Passes, Reversed Physics (boats on land, ground troops
on water), and black maps (if your peon stops
unexpectedly, try chopping to see if there is a tree
in his way). Users are given the freedom to control
as much or as little of game creation as they choose.
Values may either be specified exactly or selected for
randomization. Pre-built maps may also be loaded into
CraftGen and "Genitized" using the full power of CraftGen
to enhance, customize, and randomize for a new twist to
your favorite maps.
Howard Abraham, co-designer of CraftGen and author of
the 32-bit version, commented, "We are very excited
to finally offer CraftGen to Mac users. Ever since
we released CraftGen 1.0, Mac owners have been
bombarding us with email. We were fortunate that
one of the enthusiastic users of the PC version,
Jesse Boley, is also a Mac programmer. He offered
to do the conversion after he found out that our
original programmer fell through."

Finder View Settings makes it much easier to manage the new
MacOS 8 folder-specific view settings. It can globally override
all of your folder-specific view settings, making MacOS 8 behave
more like System 7, or easily change the requested view settings
for single folders or entire disks.
To globally override the view settings, Finder View Settings
must be stored in the Control Panels folder so it can patch the
System at startup. You can then enable or disable the Finder
overriding option with the appropriate check box in the main
window.
To permanently change the view settings for a given set of
folders, you can drop them on the Control Panel's icon or into
the main window. Finder View Settings doesn't have to be in the
Control Panels folder for this to work.
New in version 1.1:
- Added a couple of options to control the Finder's zoom rectangles.
- Added a warning for locked disks and remote servers.
- Changed the override code to make it even more efficient.

Subject: [*] iView 2.9.4 Multimedia Asset Manager
Absolutely Great! Very useful and fun.
iView is an extremely handy utility that keeps track of all
your image, animation and movie files. Tired of searching
thru disks and CD's trying to locate that special photo,
qtvr or clip art you saw just last week? iView goes far
beyond the Mac's simple scrapbook utility and allows you to
view and organize many types of multimedia files on all your
disks whether mounted or not. Some of the types currently
supported include: JPEG, GIF, GIFf, TIFF, TIF, Single-layer
Photoshop, Silicon Graphics and of course PICT files,
QuickTime movies, QuickTimeVR, Fonts, GIF animations, clips,
startup screens and if XTND is installed EPS.
iView displays images as a list of file names, list of
thumbnails, variable sized image, or as a slide show. Images
can then be cataloged, launched with the application that
created them, printed in custom reports, saved as a
QuickTime=81 movie, copied to the clipboard, or dragged as
clips/files/HTML formatted pathnames to the finder or any
drag & drop savvy application. Catalogs can be searched and
saved on your hard disk. A catalog can also display
thumbnail images from volumes that may not be mounted. iView
will let you view the images and prompt you to insert the
volume to retrieve an image when needed.
iView makes extensive use of drag and drop which makes it a
pleasure to use with the finder, Photoshop and many other
applications. In fact, everything about iView is designed to
be simple, useful and intuitive. iView eliminates tedious
repetitive work and increases your ability to get the job
done. It makes image reuse and playback quick and easy. Now
individuals as well as publishers, designers, pre-press
operators and multi-media programmers will never have to
search through stacks of Zip/SyQuest back-ups for missing
files ever again.

Do you use the Finder's hierarchical list view to organize your files?
Tired of having every new folder you create show up far from where you
want it - at the top level of the hierarchy and all the way at the
bottom of the list?
NewFolderHere! makes your new folders appear where you want them!
When this extension is installed, just select an existing item (file,
application, or folder) before choosing the "New Folder" command; the
new folder will be created in the same folder as the selected item and
will be named the same as that item but with the suffix "=9F".
Works with System 7.5 or later.

Swat-Tac-Toe(TM) 3.0.1 - Copr. 1993-95, 97 Bruce A. Pokras
Requires HyperCard(R) Player 2.2 or higher, or Hyper-Stack Player (any
version).
Swat-Tac-Toe gives the ordinary game of Tic-Tac-Toe a challenging
arcade-like action. The game requires players to earn their X or O by
swatting a bug which is jumping around the Tic-Tac-Toe grid (or by popping
an elusive bubble). Two game choices are available: "One square" is a
fast-paced game which allows the player to choose a square and confines the
bug or bubble to that square; "Whole grid" lets the bug (or bubble) jump
around the entire grid and you get the X or O wherever you swat (or pop)
it. Three difficulty levels with increasingly faster bugs (or bubbles).
Version 3 adds color and also improves mouse-clicking responsiveness.
Shareware $5 (30 day trial period). May be registered world-wide through
the Kagi Shareware service.

TotoTurbo is a FAT application that runs natively on Macs and Powermacs.
TotoTurbo enormously facilitates your formulation of complex systems of
Totocalcio.
Have you even heard anything about Italian Totocalcio ? This very
popular bet game is handled by CONI and bets are based on weekly soccer
matches of the Italian championship. You have to guess the score of 13
matches, where the first matches are afforded by Serie A football teams.
Your guess hasn't to be too accurate: you only have to guess which team
wins or if they draw.
TotoTurbo 1.3.1 lets you:
- create systems from only 1 column to 13 triples
- constrain the columns to have minimum and maximum signs, maximum
consecutivity, minimum and maximum simmetries, minimum and maximum
interruptions, minimum and maximum parallels, even and odd groups,
sequences, constrained columns, derived formulas
- constrain systems with even more detailed criteria
- constrain columns by pickets
- recover unlimited number of wrong conditions
- reduce the constrained system in order to get second and third
category wins
- print the columns on paper and directly to forms
- import, export and manage the set of Totocalcio contests
- export the system to plain text
- customize the application to suit user's needs

>Is this a good deal?
The PowerBook 150 is a 33MHz 68030, 4Mb RAM, IDE hard drive, and I don't
think that price is very good at all; I wouldn't pay any more than
USD$400-500 for such a machine. The 190 was shipped in two models, a
grayscale and a DSTN color model. Both of these are 68LC040-based
(33/66MHz), 8Mb RAM minimum, and they were the last 68040 PowerBooks
manufactured. The 190 is in fact a PowerBook 5300 with an '040
motherboard instead of the PPC of the 5300 series.
The price is not good if it's a bare 8Mb 190 (grayscale) - I would not
pay more than USD$600-650 for a grayscale 190, but it's ~reasonable~ for
a 190cs, particularly if it has some extra RAM. However, the PowerPC
upgrade for this model is very expensive (motherboard swap), and I
suggest it is not the best buy you could get for the money. For under
USD$1000, trawling Usenet you will be able to get a 520c or 540c,
possibly even with PowerPC upgrade already fitted.
Although it's older than the 190, the 500 series was a fantastically
popular and reliable range of PowerBooks, very upgradable, and it
features built-in video out, Ethernet and [optional] internal faxmodem,
which the 190/5300 does not. The PowerPC upgrades for PB500 are readily
available; the original Apple 100MHz card is obtainable "using
connections" [;-)] and the Newer 167MHz card is still a current item.
The only features which the 190 has which the 500 lacks (and you should
consider these carefully) are built-in PCMCIA, and IDE hard disk
interface. PCMCIA is an optional extra on the PB500, and the PB500 has a
SCSI hard disk interface which will make sourcing a larger HDD
problematic (2.5" SCSI drives are very thin on the ground these days, and
expensive).
If you have a little more money to spend (say, USD$1200) you should be
able to get a PowerBook 1400cs/117 (discontinued model). This is a much
better buy than either of the above, because it will almost certainly run
Rhapsody, it has an infinitely better display (and 800x600 to boot),
swappable media bay (floppy/CD-ROM/Zip module), and it's still
practically a current model. Rhapsody may not be a major factor for you
now, but it's a thing to consider. I use a PowerBook 1400cs/133 as my
primary machine and I couldn't love it more; it has a superb keyboard,
beautiful display, and it's quite fast enough for everything I need.

The only sure-fire way I know of would be to copy the text into a text
editor that allows search-replace and replace every ">" with "".
If you're using Eudora and Frontier, you can put the following script in
your Eudora shared menu:
s = Eudora.getSelectedText ();
t = string.replaceAll ( s, ">", "");
Eudora.replaceSelectedText (t);
This is something of a brute force solution, as it will strip _every_ ">"
from the selected text, but there you have it. A guy could probably make
it smarter with a little work.

Subject: ether and local talk as one
Ethertalk and localtalk can co-exist. There are software programs that
enable you to create a virtual bridge from one 'type' of network to the
other without expensive hardware. The software is available from your local
apple software dealer. The name is Apple LocalTalk Bridge.
It is installed on a machine that will act as a conduit. The
machine is both hooked into the ethernet and localtalk networks. Once
installed, you can share files between the two networks. I have been using
the bridge for a year now with out a problem. The only real downside is the
'bridge' machine is slowed down considerably.

daughter cards?
I have a PowerWave 132 with quite a bit of RAM, some of which has been in

So my questions are:
Which product will work best?
Is 60ns RAM really required?
Is it possible that I have RAM even slower than 70ns and how would I find out?
Assuming I really like my PowerWave as configured, would I be better off
saving for new G3 box instead of buying a G3 daughter card?
Again, appreciation to the collective wisdom of the list and TIA

Lime is reasonably priced, and does what you want, but I haven't used it so
I don't know how stable it is.
I've used BarFly a lot; but it may do less than you need, because it's aimed
at supporting single melodic lines and knows nothing about MIDI. It's based
on the ABC notation system; you input the music in ASCII and the program
sanity-checks it and lets you listen to it or print it. The print quality
is no better than okay, and there are some irritating things either ABC in
general or BarFly in particular can't do at all (trills for ABC, sensible
tails and beams on gracenotes for BarFly) but the input and editing process
is far easier than graphical manipulation. There are other ABC packages, for
Macs, Microsoft & Unix, that do support MIDI. The ABC homepage is reachable
through http://www.celtic.stanford.edu/tunes.html. BarFly's author is very
helpful.
Here's an example of what you'd be getting into; a Sacred Harp hymn in the
ABC notation. Successive lines contain an index number, title, time
signature, key/mode, and the notes. It's even sight-readable as is for
simple tunes like this. The largest thing I've done with ABC is a four-page
piece of fairly virtuosic flute music, and it worked OK for that.

Here's how to do this using ResEdit under 7.6.1. Other Systems are
proabbly similar, but YMMV.
1. Duplicate the System file by option-dragging it out of hte System Folder.
2. Open the new duplicate with ResEdit.
3. Open the 'KCHR' resources. These are your existing keyboard layouts.
4. Select the one you want to modify [I modified ID 0, "U.S."], then select
"Copy".
5. Select "Paste"; choose "Unique ID" in the dialog that will come up.
[This gave me a KCHR ID=128].
6. Select that new resource; Get Info [cmd-I].
7. Change the name to something that will remind you of your change [I used
"U.S. w/ swapped cntl - capslock"].
8. Double-click your new KCHR. A somewhat intimidating dialog will appear.
Over on the right in this dialog, you'll see a list of tables. Hold down a
modifier key on your keyboard [cntl, opt, shift, cmd, capslock] and note
that the table changes.
9. Make note of which table is used when you hold the Control key; also
note whcih one is used when you select Caps Lock.
10. Hold down the Control key and click on the table that you noted for the
Caps Lock key. You'll get asked if you want to do this. You do.
11. Repeat step 11 for the Caps Lock Key. Hold it down and click on the
table that you noted for the Control key. Again, confirm that you want to
do this.
12. Quit ResEdit, saving changes.
Now, if you replace your current System file with this modified one, you'll
have a new keyboard layout in your Keyboard control panel. When you select
this layout, the behavior of the Caps Lock and Control keys will be swapped.
Note, however, that this will have no effect on the hardware behavior of
the keys. The Caps Lock key will still lock when you press it, though it
will have the effect that the Control key used to have. Similarly, the
Control key will not lock, though if you hold it down, you'll get Caps Lock
behavior.
