Subject: [*] Banzai4800 (a newton talking program for gps navigation)
Now, a new version compatible with Garmin II and III (set at 4800
baud and with NMEA sentence filter) as well as Scoutmaster GPS (just set
Scoutmaster's baudrate at 4800).
Rich Drinkard, a beta tester, made some suggestions on activity
sounds and map display and so that is improved.
Rich Drinkard reported me experiments that tripmate does speak NMEA
sentences! So, I shall be working on a version for it!
I am working on a mp100 Garmin II III and Scoutmaster version with
limited features.
Notice also the correction in spelling.
This is embarrassing and in no way was intended as insulting. But,
anyone with Japanese bilingual experience would pronounce Bonzai as "bone
sigh" which would hardly get across the feeling of "Live 10,000 years"
battle cry or "hip hip hooray".
Thanks for avoiding this embarrassment are due Jimmie Jenkins with
20 years experience learning the Japanese language. Also, thanks are due to
David Fiedler and Paul S. Hetrick who wished me luck dispite correcting my
bad spelling first.
I stand a Bonzai, duly pruned and thank my senseis.
With Steve Weyer's newt and some helpful correspondence, I have
been developing a newton gps navigator program for some years while doing a
Ph.D. in theoretical physics with intensive background in differential
geometry and carrying on international correspondence. Thanks are due this
sensei, too.

(marka@ee.mcgill.ca).
The digest is a collection of article threads from the internet
newsgroups comp.sys.mac.programmer.help, csmp.tools, csmp.misc and
csmp.games. It is designed for people who read news semi-regularly and
want an archive of the discussions. If you don't know what a
newsgroup is, you probably don't have access to it. Ask your systems
administrator(s) for details. If you don't have access to news, you
may still be able to post messages to the group by using a mail server
like anon.penet.fi (mail help@anon.penet.fi for more information).
Each issue of the digest contains one or more sets of articles (called
threads), with each set corresponding to a 'discussion' of a particular
subject. The articles are not edited; all articles included in this digest
are in their original posted form (as received by our news server at
ee.mcgill.ca). Article threads are not added to the digest until the last
article added to the thread is at least two weeks old (this is to ensure that
the thread is dead before adding it to the digest). Article threads that
consist of only one message are generally not included in the digest.
The digests can be obtained by email, ftp or through the World Wide Web.
If you want to receive the digest by mail, send email to

Subject: [*] PowerMenu v2.2: The Definitive Contextual Menu Utility
PowerMenu is the definitive, comprehensive Contextual Menu
utility for MacOS. PowerMenu adds powerful commands to the Finder's
Contextual Menu under MacOS 8, and provides its own Contextual Menu
for System 7 users. PowerMenu's wide range of commands lets you:
- Open selected files into any running application
- Open selected files into any other application on your drive
- Move, copy or make an alias of selected files into target
folders of your choosing
- Quickly open commonly used files or launch any application right
from your Contextual Menu
As if that weren't enough, PowerMenu also provides a pop-up menu,
accessible from any application, that lets you quickly open or launch
your commonly used files and applications with a single
click. PowerMenu's menus are all fully hierarchical, and are
automatically rebuilt in the background as you work.
PowerMenu v2.2 was released on Thursday, November 13th. The
new version is a free update to registered users, and features a
unique implementation of "File Copy and Paste", a powerful feature
that lets you "pick up" files in the Finder and "drop" them into a
destination folder. PowerMenu even lets you gather multiple files
from different locations and move or copy them all to a single
destination with just a few clicks or keystrokes!
PowerMenu is heavily customizable and is optimized for both
Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers, meaning it will run at full
speed on whatever model you use. PowerMenu requires MacOS 8, System
7.5.x, or System 7.1.x with the Scriptable Finder installed. PowerMenu
is $15US shareware.
You can read more about PowerMenu, and see some screen shots of it
in action, at . That site also has

enough) or resedit files containing ppats. Either format is really messy
for the average person to install as their destop pattern.
This is a small program that converts Wallpaper and ppat texture
collections into draggable clippings that can be drag and dropped onto the
desktop pattern control panel.
In the readme I neglected to mention that each pattern is displayed while
TexVert is running. The user must click the mouse to continue.
Enjoy seeing all those old Wallpaper patterns again!

Subject: [*] Verbs & Nouns 1.7.4 - foreign language learning
'Verbs & Nouns' is an application for practising inflection, translation
and pronunciation at the level of single words. Features include the
opportunity to do inflection exercises, and translation exercises in
both directions; to record and play sound for single words; and to do
exercises based on sound. The program keeps a record of exercises, and
identifies the words that the student has difficulty with. Along with
the program, you need a module for the target language concerned. The
program can also be used as an authoring tool to write your own modules
of inflected words for any language. A built-in 'inflection-generator'
simplifies the addition of these words. A 'Find' feature allows the
modules to be used as bilingual dictionaries.
Ready-made modules are already available for certain languages. You can
visit my home-page to get more information:

Subject: (Q) Recommendations for architectural drawing
I'm not very familiar with architectual drawing, but I suspect that
ClarisDraw might be suitable. I use it on an LC475. I expect it needs a
colour or gray-scale display, so it may not work on a Mac Plus, Classic etc.
It includes clip-art for common architectual symbols, furniture, etc, and
you can easily specify the sizes of objects by typing measurements in any
units. The rulers do scaling too. Rotation of objects by any amount is
allowed, and there are various options to help in aligning points, and
making end-points snap onto other end-points. I used it to draw scale plans
of houses when I was house-hunting, and I planned my bathroom in it too. My
one and only reservation is that Claris don't seem to have shown much
commitment to producing upgrades for it. It is still in version 1 after more
than three years.
You can almost certainly find a demo version on the Claris web site. Try
www.claris.com. You might find that the drawing component of ClarisWorks in
its latest incarnation has enough of the features that you need to make that
a better buy, but be careful that it really does do all you need.

Hi Info-Mac Folks:
My sister-in-law has asked me to recommend to her a reasonably-priced
Mac program for simple architectural drawing. The main constraint here
(besides price) is that she has an old 68K-based Mac with a maximum of 10
meg of RAM. Does there exist such a product that anyone feels good about
recommending?
Thanks!

Subject: Eudora Internet Mail Server
[ A copy of this message has been posted to the newsgroups ]

I want to install a mail server for our office, so that all users (which
are running Windows 3.11, Windows 95 and MacOS) could send/receice
e-mail to each other as well as to outside internet addresses.
To do this, I thought I'd set up a separate computer where a mail server
software would run, which connects to our ISP at predetermined times via
a modem connection. I have an own domain name for the company; the WWW
part is running on a virtual server at our ISP, but he said it is not a
problem to have a different server for e-mail. He can offer SMTP or UUCP
connection to exchange messages.
Rather than setting up a WinNT or Linux mail server, I thought that
using EIMS 2.0 would save me much hassle. I have a spare Mac IIci,
which, according to the indications in Qualcomm's WWW pages, is
sufficient to have EIMS running. I would just need a NuBus 10Base-T
card, but this should not be a problem.
But there are some questions remaining:
- Can EIMS 2.0 be used at all for dial-up connections or does it want a
permanent connection? EIMS 1.2 freeware obviously wants permanent
connection, but I did not see anything mentioned in the EIMS 2.0
description.
- Can EIMS be used to dial at pre-determined times, exchange messages
and hang up again? Or is it possible to do this with AppleScript?
- The Qualcomm web pages don't say what the maximum number of users
(addresses) is, and how the number of users/addresses affects memory
usage. They only write: "even small organizations can have hundreds of
people using different aliases and host multiple domains".
- EIMS 2.0 is "sold electronically". Has anyone dealt with this purchase
method? And why can't I use it when I am not "inside the United States
and Canada", as Qualcomm writes?
Thank you for any tips and experiences. Christian.
