Do any of these scenarios sound familiar? * You're trying to phone your girl/boyfriend, but the line's always busy because he/she is always using the phone or online? * You're trying to get through to some company's technical support phone number, but there's no answer because all their lines are in use? * You finally get through on a call, but you're put on hold, and you end up looking like Quasimodo because you spend a geological era holding the receiver up to your ear with your shoulder while you try to get some work done at the keyboard, listening endlessly to "Your call is important to us..."? "Keep Trying!" is the solution. Keep Trying! (KT) is a utility for dialing phone numbers through your modem. This in itself is not unique; some Address Book programs and other utilities include such a feature. The distinguishing features of KT, however, are the ways in which it removes the frustration of "getting through" to a hard-to-reach party. If the number you're trying to call is busy, or there is no answer, KT will automatically retry the number repeatedly, at intervals you control. You can set how many attempts to make, whether to retry after a busy signal or no-answer or both, and different wait intervals for a busy signal and a no-answer. You don't even need to pick up the phone until your call goes through successfully. You just leave KT running in the background while you get on with your life; the program will automatically (you guessed it) "keep trying!". Additionally, KT has a unique "listen in" option that could literally save your neck the next time you're put on hold for an indeterminate period. By activating this feature when you're asked to "please stay on the line...", you can hang up the phone's receiver and listen in on the line through your modem's speaker. You can then go about your business in comfort until you hear a (non-recorded) person come on the line. Keep Trying! is a must-have, not only for people who make a lot of phone calls, but for anyone who has ever suffered the frustration of making a "simple telephone call". Keep Trying is a joint production of programmer Karl Bunker and sound engineer Larry Lloyd. Minimum requirements: A Mac with 16 colors/grays or better, System 7.1 or later, a modem and a phone on the same line as the modem. This is version 1.0.2 of Keep Trying! This version fixes a problem with the display of long phone numbers, such as those including Calling Card account numbers. Shareware; $10.00. It works using two advanced self-organizing modeling technologies: Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) and Analog Complexing. This is the first time that both of these algorithms have been available on any computer platform. Built on the cybernetic principles of self-organization, KnowledgeMiner brings high-end modeling capabilities to your desktop without the need for an expert. It can learn completely unknown relationships between the outputs and inputs of a given system in an evolutionary way from a very simple organization to an optimally complex one by itself. KnowledgeMiner has been used successfully for analysis and prediction in the fields of finance, economics, imaging, ecology, health, biotechnology, chemistry, math and many others. Professionals in many areas can benefit by downloading and trying out the examples then using this tool to mine their own field for new relationships. In comparison with statistical modeling tools and neural networks KnowledgeMiner stands out as easier, faster and more applicable to a wide range of real-world problems since it creates the model structure or network topology automatically without predefinition. This makes KnowledgeMiner the least expensive and most effective modeling and prediction tool available on any platform. MiniCalendar is your ordinary Kaleidoscope savvy system calendar. Its main goal is to provide the user with a basic calendar for any month between January 1582 and December 29940. MiniCalendar is not designed to replace full function date books, rather it is designed to complement such programs. Programs such as Claris Organizer or Now Up-To-Date excel at managing appointments and dates, but are clumsy when it comes to looking up what day your birthday is going to fall on next year. MiniCalendar fills this niche nicely. Since MiniCalendar is small and easy enough to use, you will want to leave it running so you will always have access to a calendar. As an added bonus, if you are a Kaleidoscope user, MiniCalendar 2.0 will use the current Kaleidoscope color scheme to create a more unified system appearance. You will want to check out this feature. Who will use MiniCalendar? - Users who need to look up dates, but do not need a full scale date book - Kaleidoscope / Aaron users who want a more unified system appearance - Users who want to show off to their PC friends that the Mac is not only year 2000 compliant but year 29940 compliant! - Or anyone who needs quick access to a calendar New in Version 2.0 - Removed support for the now defunct Better Beeps. - Supports Kaleidoscope / Aaron color schemes. - Users can enhance the display by using the system utility pattern - Added support for MacOS 8.0 - Increased reliability in low memory situations - Now includes Catara=81 Registration System - Various other improvements and bug fixes System Requirements - 680x0 or PPC - Color Quickdraw - System 7 or MacOS 8.0 - 256K of Free Memory =46or more information, please read the Read Me file enclosed, or visit our Web page: http://www.idir.net/~catara/ [Archived as /info-mac/app/time/mini-calendar-20.hqx; 439K] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Oct 1997 07:30:06 -0700 From: nick@CS.Stanford.EDU Subject: [*] Mortgage Maker 2.0 Mortgage Maker 2.0 - estimates the various costs of a home mortgage at the time of closing. It computes the "qualifying ratios" which lenders use to evaluate a mortgage application. Its Backsolve feature answers questions like "how much house can I afford on this income?" For refinances, the program compares the net monthly payment situation with and without the refinance. The program is useful for homeowners and prospective homeowners who need a quick way to analyze a purchase or refinance, and for financial and real estate professionals who need to print analyses for clients. Mortgage Maker is freeware for personal use and shareware for real estate and financial professionals.
