Somewhere in-betweenst adding wonderful new if-then protocols to old Filemaker database and popping in a couple of relational files, I had the sudden urge to see if Claris had fixed what I regarded as FmPro 2.1 glitches -- could I go into Find mode and pop some values in this layout and then go to this other layout to pop in some more values and then hit return and have it actually work? Would I be able to open button defs and get a scrollbar on righthand side so as to be able to rapidly drag down thru the couple hundred scripts instead of having to watch it scroll thru in slow motion? In calculation-field defs, could I go to "fields" windows and type first couple letters and have it jump down without having to scroll thru? Hmm, come to think of it, could I open scripts and type first couple letters...? Can report one hit amongst misses, but is NOT documented in the RTFM. UsersGuide for Fm3.0 warns you that in Find mode you gotta make sure all fields you wanna do finds in is on same layout. But--!!! is not true! Go ahead, you try! Go Find, type something in layout "a" that isn't in layout "b", go to layout "b" type something in field that doesn't exist in layout "a", hit return, proverbial voila! You think Claris knows this? Naaah, maybe in backrooms chained to coding cubicles someone gotta know, but techsupport for Claris = uninformed of much. FileMaker is more cool than any manual says. Unintentional easter eggs all over the place. F'rinstance, was told if you are trying to set up stations that will be guests, they gotta launch FMPro, go "Hosts", select file. Wouldn't work to just doubleclick icon of specific main database file. Hmm... most funny thing, they said same for FmPro 2.1 too, they wrong then. I try under 3.0, first time as guest actually do get bad error messages. (FWIW, good enthusiastic Claris techsuppt psn on such subject advise: "Make dummy database, on open launch script is gonna open *across network* as potential guest the file, you choose once, save script".) That work. But also, after first time instructing localguest machine on how to open actual remote file, FileMaker remember from then on to open as potential guest over network. Just put alias for doubleclicking on all host boxes. Even cross platform, using Norton Desktop for maximum Macifization of OtherwiseForsaken PC interface, or else by MSWindows95 using "shortcuts" as second best sol'n. After 1st attempt with DialogBox info-provision, manages to recall for subsequent attempts that database best accessed over network to machine :filepath:here.fp3 Much wonderful scripting capabilities even allow programmer to set diff scripts all over the place if user notequals primary (host) user. Less useful is failure to set scripts such that if password=x then y. >From previous msgs to this list many readers understand I was wanting for cross-platform concurrent filesharing solution. The Claris folks, upon understanding we got macs and Win3.1 boxes, at that time 2.1 FmPro databases, was saying "Get Novell". The cost of getting full cross-platform Novell was way exorbitant. Even discussed possibilities for using SoftWindows. Dragged on on and on. Only after buying DAVE for crossplatform filesharing upgrading to 3.0 FmPro did I discover that both these purchases unnecessary--coulda used common protocol IPX on both platforms, didn't need to mount anyone's shared volumes, didn't have to upgrade to 3.0 version, certainly didn't have to shell out for expen$ive Novell softwares, didn't even have to have bought the cheaper x-platform DAVE. If Claris supportfolks honest and know- ledgable, could've said to boss, we gotta install only IPX stuff everything else way cool. Ignorance of how easy it is to do crossplatform = penalty flags for Claris. Gr ow up and learn, please. Know what your way cool software can do. But...ignoring reasons for expensively/expansively acquiring same, combo of DAVE + TCP/IP common local protocols (later to add t1) plus FMPro 3.0 = mac-centric administrative database management solution without Novell. = Goodthing. You've all seen the kind of post where someone can't get a piece of software to work, had tried everything, is mad as hell, yadda, yadda, yadda. Then someone replies that "I don't know what your problem is. It works fine for me." In early January I posted a message to comp.sys.mac.apps and Info-Mac Digest V15 #8 complaining that Britannica CD 97 was not only buggy and slow but had the audacity to delete all its own files shortly after an error message (triggered by a bug) occurred. I also complained that tech support had been invisible. I followed up in early February (to c.s.m.a & Info-Mac V15 #21) that tech support was still being invisible. Well tech support eventually did contact me, and seemed genuinely baffled at the symptoms I was getting. It sounded like they really wanted to get to the bottom of this, and they scheduled a conference call for a few days later. I had run a conflict test back in January and had "proven" that their program blew up with only Apple extensions running. But if I was soon going to be talking with a couple of techies, I'd better review my data. This time I did things a bit differently. I reasoned that since the Britannica search engine is AppleScript based, I would include Scripting Additions in the conflict test. Aha! I could now make this fatal problem come and go! Part of the file deletion problem (and all of a previously hidden killer) seem to be caused by an Addition called 5HOTA Speech OSAX(FAT), which was a remaining part of an installation of something I picked up at Info-Mac and later trashed. Summary: Britannica CD 97 does NOT trash its own files WHEN INSTALLED PROPERLY! It is somewhat buggy, but not seriously so. And there are workarounds that work. Because its content comes from the Dead-Tree-Edition of the Britannica, there is a whole lot of information packed on this CD, but don't expect any big multimedia flash. Yes it IS very slow. Being based on both Netscape and AppleScript, it takes a while to do even a simple search. I'm not throwing away my Grolier's or American Heritage, but I'm holding on to Britannica too. No. 0529 Rev. B) card on my PPC 7500. Since it displayed only 256 colors in the beginning and began to show "ghost images" all the time, I've inquired with Radius and they have told me I'd need 2MB additonal VRAM "In order to get more colors". That's what I did, and guess what happened - I'm still stuck with 256 colors. I've asked both the folks at Newer Technologies (who brought us GURU for information on - regular - RAM requirements) and at Radius whether there is any program I could check VRAM with (Snooper would not do on the PPC 7500) and whether they have any clue if I might have bought "bad" VRAM, or just wasted money on those 2MB - but not received an aswer so far. Maybe one of you would know.
