Install Instructions

Introduction

Solo Cards is written in Java 2. That means that it needs the Java 2 Runtime Environment (J2RE) be installed and configured on your computer. The J2RE is available for free on many Operating Systems like Windows 95 / 98 / 2000 / NT, Unix Solaris, Unix Linux, or Mac OS. Once installed, the J2RE will enable your computer to run any software developed in Java 2. You problably heard about it because your web browser surely supports the Java extensions to run applets for instance. Solo Cards is a special kind of Java program known as a stand alone application; it does not need a web browser to run (it is not an applet), but needs the J2RE.

Installing Solo Cards

In fact there is no installation program for Solo Cards. You just need to unzip the "SoloCard.zip" archive in any dedicated directory of your hard disk (don't forget to use the option that will create the subdirectories). No file will be installed in your precious system directory, so your Windows installation (for example) won't be polluted by extra files (remember those pesty .ini, .dll, .ocx, etc.). You can also add shortcuts to your desktop to quickly launch the "SoloCard.jar".
The uninstall procedure is as simple ; just delete the directory in which you unzipped the game. That's all !

Installing J2RE

If the J2RE is not already installed on your computer, you first need to get a free copy.

At the time this documentation is written, Sun provides the J2RE version 1.3.0. This game has been optimized for the version 1.3.0. If you own a previous version of the J2RE you are highly encouraged to load the latest available version.

For Windows (95 / 98 / 2000 / NT) you can get a copy at Sun Java Website.
For Unix Linux you can get a copy at Sun Java Website.
For Unix Solaris you can get a copy at Sun Java Website.
For Mac get your copy at ...
For other OS ask your manufacturer or your retailer ...

To install the package, follow the appropriate instructions. If requested during the installation, it is highly recommended to let the ".jar" files be automatically associated with the J2RE; that way you will be able to launch ".jar" files by just double clicking them in your file browser (Windows Explorer for example).

Starting Solo Cards

You can start the game by browsing the install directory and double clicking on the "SoloCard.jar" file. If the ".jar" files are not already associated with the J2RE you are highly encouraged to do it ; the program that runs Java 2 applications is "javaw.exe".
On Windows systems for example, double clicking on the "
SoloCard.jar" file should display the "Open with" question dialog when ".jar" files are not associated with any program. Find the "javaw.exe" program using the "Other" button and click "Ok" when found. Thereafter, every ".jar" file can be run automatically. You can also consider to add a shortcut to "SoloCard.jar" to your desktop for quick launch.
